The Story of “Rudy”:
This piece is deeply personal—a tribute to the horse who carried me through one of the most uncertain seasons of my life. I bought Rudy while on medical leave from medical school, at a time when everything I thought I was building had come to a sudden pause. I didn’t know what healing would look like, or who I was without the identity I had worked so hard for—but I knew I needed something steady, something real. And Rudy became that for me.
Trained from the age of four, Rudy and I grew together. His quiet strength, wild beauty, and honest spirit taught me to show up with presence, even when I didn’t feel whole. This artwork is my way of honoring that bond. Created in large scale and rich mixed media layers, the piece is bold, colorful, and full of movement—reflecting Rudy’s power, grace, and the joy he brought into my life.

This painting is based on a photo I took of Rudy during one of his favorite rituals: rolling in the dirt. Rolling is a horse’s way of releasing tension and relaxing—it’s something they only do when they feel completely safe and at ease in their surroundings. Rudy loved to roll, and capturing that moment felt like capturing a small piece of his spirit—free, playful, and entirely himself.
More than just a portrait, this is a symbol of healing, of unexpected companionship, and of the way God meets us in the middle of the unknown. It’s for anyone who’s ever found strength through creation, love through an animal, or peace in letting go of the path they once thought they had to follow.
