God Is Close to the Brokenhearted

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

I'm writing this right after the shooting of Charlie Kirk and this is the prayer that came to me:

Loss has a way of shaking us. It reminds us how fragile life is, how quickly things can change, and how deeply we need both one another and the steady hope of Christ.

When grief hits — whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the collapse of something we were building, or even the quiet griefs of unmet expectations — it can feel overwhelming. Sometimes the weight is too much to carry on our own.

But the good news is that we don’t have to.

Scripture promises that the Lord is close in those very moments when we feel most broken. He doesn’t stand far off or wait for us to get ourselves together. He comes near. He bends low to comfort, to strengthen, and to remind us that we are not abandoned.

When the Weight Feels Too Heavy

If you are in a season of grief or discouragement, I want you to know this: you don’t need to carry it alone. Reach out — to God in prayer, to a trusted friend, or to someone who can listen and walk with you.

Sometimes even a single conversation can be a lifeline. Sometimes it’s just enough to remember that someone cares.

Grief and the Creative Process

In my own art-making, I often find that grief makes its way into the canvas. Colours, textures, and even unfinished brushstrokes carry prayers I don’t always have words for. Painting becomes both an offering and a way of processing — a reminder that beauty and sorrow can exist side by side, and that even in brokenness, God is at work.

Maybe for you it isn’t painting — maybe it’s music, journaling, gardening, or simply sitting still. Whatever form it takes, creative expression can become a way to lean into God’s nearness when words feel too small.

A Final Word

If you’re walking through loss, please don’t forget:
You are not alone.
God is near.
And His love holds steady even when everything else feels fragile.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Thank you, as always, for walking with me here — through art, faith, and life.

Warmly in Him,
Martina
