The story behind “The Fields She Carried”:
I painted this piece for my mother. Not because our relationship is simple—it isn’t. But because I wanted to honour the part of her story that shaped so much of mine.
She grew up in Sisak, Croatia, under the shadow of the Iron Curtain. A childhood marked by limitation, by quiet tension—but also by beauty. She found it in the pages of books, in open skies, in the fields just beyond the edges of control. She walked there often, alone with her thoughts, always reaching for something freer.
“The Field She Carried” is a reflection of that girl—the one who learned to dream beyond borders. It’s about the way she held on to wildness and wonder, even when the world around her tried to suppress it. I’ve always respected her for that. For her mind, her resilience, her hunger for something more.
There’s distance between us, sure. But this painting is a bridge. A quiet gesture of understanding, and a recognition that we share more than we sometimes realize—a love of nature, of stories, of seeking.
Part of the Impressions in Oil collection, “The Field She Carried” is a portrait of memory, spirit, and inheritance. It’s for the ones who found their freedom in books and wild grasses, and carried that field within them ever since.
