The story behind “Breakthrough”:
This is where The Firmament Collection begins—both on the canvas and in my own story.
Breakthrough was the first piece I created in this series, at a time when I was just starting to find my way back to faith after years of searching, wrestling, and feeling lost in the dark.
As I painted, the outline of a black bear began to emerge—its massive head breaking through the darkness, mouth wide open in a raw, fearless roar. I refined it layer by layer, working in mixed media and finishing it in oil, using subtle shifts in texture to build depth and presence.
The bear felt symbolic. Not just of strength or power, but of the moment when something deep within you rises up and refuses to stay silent any longer. For me, this painting marks the moment I began to open my heart again—to faith, to hope, and to the possibility that God was still writing my story, even when I couldn’t see the way forward.
The colour palette—black, white, and soft grey—ties this piece to the rest of The Firmament Collection, reflecting the movement of light through darkness, and the quiet power of creation itself. Like the night sky, it feels vast and full of mystery, yet deeply personal at the same time.
Breakthrough isn’t just a bear roaring into the dark. It’s the moment when you stop holding back. The moment when you realize the light has been breaking through all along.
