Out of the Deep

Out of the Deep is one of the more elemental pieces in the Living Waters collection — painted with a sense of reverence for the mystery of beginnings. I poured this one on a hot summer day while the ground felt dry and cracked beneath my feet, and I remember thinking about how creation itself was called forth from chaos — light out of darkness, life from dust.

The textures in this piece are thick and layered, rising up from the canvas like cooled magma. Deep browns and burnt reds form the foundation, while golden light erupts from the center in a fiery bloom. There are soft wisps of white that twist through the flame, like breath or wind — gentle but undeniable.

To me, this painting is about the Spirit moving in the unseen places, in the silence before the spark. It holds the moment just before transformation — the holy tension of waiting, the fire that’s already forming in the deep.
