The story behind “Hope”:
Hope was one of the most vulnerable pieces to paint in this collection. It came to life slowly, in layers of mixed media and oil, much like the slow, quiet process of learning to hope again after a long season of disappointment and doubt.
Emerging from the darkness, a single deer stands poised—its body soft but strong, its gaze lifted upward toward something unseen. There’s no light source painted in this piece, no clear answer to what the deer is looking at. And yet, there’s an undeniable sense that it sees something beyond what the viewer can see. That’s what hope feels like to me—lifting your head even when you’re not sure what comes next, trusting there’s light ahead even when you can’t yet feel it.
The deer has always felt like a personal symbol in my work. Gentle, yet aware. Vulnerable, yet steady. In scripture, the deer often represents longing and spiritual thirst—"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God" (Psalm 42:1). This piece captures that tension—the ache for something more, and the quiet trust that what we long for is already on its way.
With a palette of rich blacks and soft, delicate highlights, Hope belongs to The Firmament Collection, reflecting the unseen rhythms of faith, nature, and renewal. It pairs beautifully with other works in the collection or stands alone as a reminder to keep looking up—especially in the dark.
Because sometimes hope doesn’t roar.
Sometimes, it’s the quiet act of standing still and lifting your gaze.
